Science Olympiad is a science-oriented academic games program. It is part of the national Science Olympiad, begun in 1983 to increase interest in science. Currently the Olympiad has members in all 50 states, totaling more than 14,000 actively participating schools.
High school teams prepare throughout the school year to compete in tournaments held on local, state and national levels. These competitions consist of 23 individual and team events which measure abilities in various scientific fields. These events change somewhat from year to year.
